Obalon Balloon

What is it?

The Obalon Balloon System is a swallowable intragastric balloon system to help you feel full and eat less. Up to three balloons are swallowed with total time of six months in your stomach.

When do we use it?

The Obalon Balloon System is indicated for temporary use to facilitate weight loss in adults with Body Mass Index (BMI)  ≥30 and ≤ 40 kg/m2 who have failed to lose weight through diet and exercise. It is to be used in conjunction with a long-term supervised diet and behavior modification program designed to increase the possibility of significant long-term weight loss and maintenance of that weight loss.

What is the process?

In your physician’s office, you swallow a capsule containing a small balloon and then your physician inflates the balloon. Xrays are taken to make sure the balloon is in the correct position. The first balloon will be in your stomach for 6 months. A second balloon capsule is swallowed 1 month after the first balloon and a third balloon capsule 2 months after the second balloon. These balloons will take up more space in your stomach to help you lose weight. All balloons are taken out 6 months after the first balloon capsule is swallowed. A fully inflated single balloon has a volume of 250cc, weighing approximately 3 grams (less than a penny) and about the size of a small orange. Therefore, all three balloons have a combined volume of 750cc.

In six months, the balloons are removed in an office procedure requiring light sedation with recovery of less than one hour.
